Developing skills for lifelong learning.

Do you think learning stops when school ends? It doesn’t. As we grow from toddlers to young adults, learning also evolves. Individuals with a disability are no exception. Learning can involve skills like being an active listener, becoming a more effective communicator, to gaining competitive job skills. I believe EVERYONE deserves the best quality of life. If you are willing to invest the time in helping the person in your life learn the skills that allows them to live a happy and independent life, then I’m the right speech therapist for you.

Jan Alejado Speech Services was created to ensure personalized speech servicing with an emphasis on the individual’s family and community unit. As an early intervention and related service provider in the public sector, I’ve seen how segmented servicing can fall apart when the team of providers, family, and other collaborators don’t work together. My mission is to focus on keeping that quality of care by ensuring that the team works toward the goals of the individual. Please see the descriptions of servicing below.

Jan Alejado, MS CCC-CLP, TSSLD

Jan Alejado is a New York and California State licensed Speech Language Pathologist and is recognized by the American Speech and Hearing Association (ASHA) with a Certificate of Clinical Competence. In New York State she is also a Certified Teacher of Students with Speech and Language Disabilities (TSSLD). Ms. Alejado received her Bachelors of Science in 2009 for Speech Language Pathology and Audiology at New York University. She then received her Masters of Science in 2012 at the City University of New York, Brooklyn College in Speech Communication Disorders.

Ms. Alejado’s exposure to communication disorders began when she was 17 during a babysitting job for a close family friend. Discovering that two of the children were diagnosed with Autism, Alejado embarked on a path to look for further opportunities in community programs and organizations that assisted individuals with disabilities. As a public servant working today, Alejado understands the importance of access and its emphasis on starting young. Through years of experience, she has gained the knowledge to challenge the public model and explore other tactics that help the individual during a small time frame of servicing, while finding ways to expand the support networks of the individual and their loved ones.

Experience

Ms. Alejado is a Board of Education Scholarship recipient and has provided speech language therapy from Pre-K to 8th grade for the NYC Dept. of Education public school system since 2012. She’s managed various Individualized Education Plans (IEP), parent training, and triennial meetings. She continues to conduct speech screenings and services for at-risk students. Alejado also provides outside speech services for students who are granted Related Service Authorizations (RSAs) through the NYC Dept. of Education. Lastly, Jan has provided early intervention services including therapy and evaluations since 2014.

Distinctions

In 2020, the NYC United Federation of Teacher’s Speech Chapter recognized and presented an award to Ms. Alejado and her students at P.S. 204 (The Vince Lombardi School) for Better Speech and Hearing Month for The Lego Project. This work involved building student narrative confidence by incorporating sequenced images of LEGO scenes based on student stories. Watch the stories.
